In 2017,, St. Louis Catholic School introduced a Catholic Montessori track for our early childhood students. We remain the sole Catholic school in Austin to provide this option. As pioneers in the Diocese of Austin, we offer parents a choice between traditional early childhood education and Montessori methods. This innovative program has gained popularity and is highly sought-after for children aged 3 to 5 years old.
Montessori education emphasizes individual progress and development, enabling each student to learn at their own pace and advance to the next lesson when ready. Collaborative learning among peers is another crucial aspect. Montessori fosters an inclusive and supportive class community guided by a specially trained Montessori guide who observes and interacts, serving both the academic and faith formation needs of each child and the entire group.
The classroom environment is arranged to suit the developmental needs, interests, and abilities of the children. Spaciousness and beautiful furnishings create an atmosphere that supports each student's journey toward their fullest potential.
Montessori materials are crafted to encourage spontaneous, hands-on learning that is self-seleced by students during the established work time. Students have the opportunity to make abstract concepts tangible through active experiential learning.
A Montessori child enjoys considerable freedom of movement and freedom of choice. These freedoms exist within carefully designed limits set by the environment and by the guide. When limits are ignored, positive discipline practices are employed. Practices include firm ground rules for the class community, redirection, and natural consequences.
Maria Montessori, a devout Catholic, seamlessly integrated Catholicism into the original Montessori environment. She also envisioned a similar approach to catechesis. Collaborating with Biblical scholars, priests, and Montessori guides, the concept of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd emerged. This approach, facilitated by a trained catechist in a prepared atrium environment, nurtures the bond between God and the child, allowing their relationship to thrive.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is part of our Catholic Montessori Program at St. Louis Catholic School. It guides each child to develop a closer connection with God through prayer and spiritual growth. The Atrium setting, catechist role, and materials align with Montessori principles.
“The great gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence."
